ISR Self-Rescue Swimming: Our Approach to Water Safety
Every child deserves the confidence and skills to be safer in and around water. ISR's specialized teaching method delivers life-saving aquatic skills through structured, developmentally appropriate lessons designed specifically for children 6 months to 6 years old.
Lesson Structure
Our proven method utilizes brief, focused sessions—10 minutes daily, Monday through Friday, for approximately 6 weeks. These carefully timed lessons optimize your child's learning while preventing fatigue and maintaining enthusiasm. I will customize each session based on their progress, comfort level, and developmental readiness.
The foundational skill across all age groups is the ability to roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe—maintaining this life-saving position until help arrives. From there, children progress through age-appropriate skills.
Rollback to Float
Children 6-12 Months Old
Generally speaking, children ages 6 months to 1 year learn the ISR Self-Rescue skill of rolling onto their backs to float, rest and breathe. They learn to maintain this position until help arrives.
Swim-Float-Swim
Children 1-6 Years Old
Older, more mobile children will learn the full ISR Self-Rescue sequence of swimming until they need air, rotating onto the back to float, then rolling back over to continue swimming. ISR students are taught to repeat this sequence until they reach the safety of the steps, the side of the pool, or the shoreline
Refreshers and Maintenance Lessons
Returning ISR Students
Keep your child's ISR skills strong with maintenance and refresher lessons. Based on your instructor's recommendation, single-day maintenance sessions can be scheduled monthly or weekly. As your child grows, two-week refresher courses (scheduled every 3-6 months) help adapt techniques to their changing size and development. These ongoing lessons ensure your child's water safety skills stay sharp and evolve with their growth.
